Symbol, Silence and Sandplay Therapy

Adele Marie Luttrell, MS, LMFT, CST

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Sandplay Therapy traces its roots back to Jungian psychology and Eastern Philosophy. This union of East and West carries the potential for wholeness, completeness, and an integrative approach to psychotherapy.

Sandplay Therapy may be described as a non-verbal, creative, symbolic experience which touches the deeper parts of our unconscious psyche to bring about healing and transformation.

Sandplay therapy encourages expression of the creative force within each of us whereby the symbol or image is born. While the symbol is unknown and mysterious it carries significant meaning and helps us to understand the world in which we live. In this experiential workshop, participants will be invited to select figurines/symbols and engage in creating a community sand tray. The activity will be done as a silent meditation to encourage an inward experience and connection to the deeper parts of our being. We will engage with our symbol on both a personal and collective level as we create an image together which may reflect our community in the present moment or be a vision of the future. A discussion of the process will follow.

PRESENTER: Adele is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) and certified Sandplay Therapist (CST). Adele maintains a private practice in Torrance CA as well as provides clinical supervision and sandplay training in community mental health. Adele is interested in the intersection of psychology, neuroscience and spirituality and has earned a certificate in “Engaged Compassion” from Claremont School of Theology. Adele views Sandplay Therapy as a creative, symbolic, meditative and transformative adjunct to traditional forms of psychotherapy.
