Performance by El Teatro de la Realidad and Closing Q & A

Sally Gordon, LMFT, RDT

El Teatro de la Realidad is a community-based theatre company originally founded as political street theatre to protest the U. S. intervention in Central America in the 1980’s. The Teatro was later transformed into a therapeutic theatre company, presenting plays about issues of concern to the participants and community such as domestic violence, incest, immigration, and gang warfare. Mostly performed in Spanish, often at the Plaza Olvera in downtown Los Angeles, the Teatro has participated in a global project directed by Dutch author Eugene van Erven, featured in Community Theatre: Global Perspectives (Routledge in 2000). The company traveled to Holland appearing at Rotterdam’s International Arts Festival (2001 and 2008).

Sally Gordon, LMFT, RDT, is the current director of El Teatro de la Realidad and the founding director of the Los Angeles Therapeutic Art Center located in Highland Park. Previously, she ran Firebird Theatre Company, a professional non-profit company, which performed adaptations of myths and folktales to young audiences throughout Southern California.  She ran theatre workshops and created plays on Skid Row, at a probation camp for young male offenders as well as at a number of community sites.
